The medicalisation of psychedelics answers many a critique of psychiatry-as-usual. Yet it comes with its own traps, threatening to repeat many of the same errors that beset standard psychiatric pharmacopeia and industrialised mental healthcare. At the same time, psychedelic treatments introduce new tensions, particularly in the uneasy blending of pharmacology and psychotherapy, and in how different forms of knowledge are included or excluded. This talk will overview some of the hopes, challenges and opportunities of emerging psychedelic therapies. Rather than asking whether it works, it asks what kind of paradigm is actually taking shape, and considers just how ‘new’ a paradigm it is shaping up to be.
Tehseen Noorani is currently a Senior Research Fellow at Waipapa Taumata Rau | The University of Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand, where he co-leads the project, Community Strategising about Psychedelic Therapy in Aotearoa. Since 2022, he has convened Reimagining Psychedelic Trials, an interdisciplinary, international working group focused on epistemological and methodological questions around psychedelics and plant medicines. He is also co-Editor-in-Chief of Psychedelics, Elsevier’s new journal intended to engage psychedelic scholarship in interdisciplinary ways.
A critical social scientist by training, Tehseen has conducted qualitative psychedelic research since 2013. He has written on psychedelic medicalisation and its discontents, the relationship between pathologized and therapeutic non-ordinary states of consciousness, and the possibilities of interweaving Indigenous and non-Indigenous knowledge systems in the remaking of psychedelic research.
